It didn’t take Jace long to get a team assembled and get back on the road to Vegas. Hal had offered to go with them, but Jace had told him to get some rest. He’d been up for over forty-eight hours and he wouldn’t be doing himself or the rest of the team any favours if he was dead on his feet. If it took Jace and his men longer than a day or two to hunt the wolf, then Hal could bring another team. He really hoped they’d be done and dusted and back at the sanctuary by sun-up, however. How hard could it be to find and capture one lone wolf?

Erik had agreed to help Jace search, and Lewis had practically insisted he go along to look after Deacon. The other man, Neal, Jace didn’t know very well. He was a member of Gabe’s pride, so Gabe had said he’d vouch for him. He’d only recently come to live in the sanctuary and no one knew anything about him from his life outside, which in and of itself Jace thought was strange…although, to be honest, Neal wasn’t the only one Jace knew little about.

The word around the compound was that Lewis had spent the last ten years working with the military on some highly secretive black ops missions, but he had yet to confirm or deny what he’d done previously. All Jace knew was that he’d been personally escorted to the sanctuary by a handful of government ops, which made the rumours about him seem all the more likely. Jace hated not knowing about the men he was working closely with…although he hardly knew much about Deacon, either, did he? At least on this mission he’d get a chance to get to know his mate and the other men.

Jace wasn’t happy that Deacon was coming along. He should know better than anyone how dangerous the wolf that attacked him was. He’d nearly died from the injuries he’d sustained. He’d insisted on going, however, and Jace was quickly learning that Deacon was incredibly strong-willed and steadfast. It seemed when he’d made his mind up about something there was no changing it. Jace could have pulled rank and insisted that Deacon stay behind, but that would have been a low blow. Besides, Jace didn’t want a doormat for a mate. He was glad Deacon had a mind of his own. It was one of the things he liked about him.

And, anyway, Deacon had been right. It made sense for him to go along. He was familiar with the staff and customers at the casino, and he did have a point about using his apartment as a base while they hunted the wolf. Whether he liked it or not, it made perfect sense.

Just over an hour after they’d left the compound, Gabe was pulling into the parking lot of Deacon’s apartment building.

“You guys wait here,” Jace instructed. “Deacon is going to grab a change of clothes and then we’ll head on over to the casino, see what we can find out.
